In this newsletter, we'll talk about lessons, tactics, good practices that?our Clients - Exporters, traders as yourself?use to?prevent and recover cargo losses, helping you achieve similar results.

Let's jump?to edition no. 12!

Most people will never understand the pain and grit it takes to export fresh produce from origin to destination. In sound condition, of course.?

?

I’m sure you heard horror stories about the fresh cargo arriving frozen to the receiver and the timeless question who is responsible for the incorrect container temperature setting. Specifically, Fahrenheit and Celsius conundrum, as this is an area where misunderstandings or simple E&O can lead to cargo total loss.

?

Here is the catch:

?

?Shipping Instructions

When booking your shipments or preparing the Bill of Lading (B/L) or Sea Waybill, it's crucial to specify the temperature requirements clearly e.g. + 13C for bananas.

?

?Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI)

The carrier conducts a Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) of the reefer container. However, it's essential to note that temperature setting is not typically included in this inspection.

?

?Shipper’s Responsibility to Prepare Cargo for Loading

As the shipper, you play a vital role in preparing and packing harvested cargo for transportation. It's your responsibility to precool the fresh produce appropriately before loading it into the reefer container. Make sure you have evidence that these steps were fulfilled.

?

?Setting Temperature

The carrier is responsible for setting the reefer container's temperature according to the instructions provided in the shipping instructions and booking confirmation. However, we strongly advise exporters to double-check reefer settings before loading the cargo. Simple error in Fahrenheit to Celsius or vice versa can lead to significant cargo damages during transit.

?

??A Word of Caution

While carriers do their best to ensure accurate temperature settings, we want to emphasize that it is your job to verify the correct temperature setting! Trust, but verify!

°F to °C: Deduct 32, then multiply by 5/9

°C to °F: Multiply by 9/5, then add 32

?

NOTE: If you find out from Exporter’s Data logger / smart device that reefer container with your cargo sailed and temperature is not performing at the requested set point, do not wait until cargo reaches destination. Alert carrier immediately. F can be changed to C even when container is on board of vessel, at transshipment port.

?

Most important reminder, you can have successful export business and still avoid cargo claims. But do you have better odds if you just start checking the reefer devise more accurately at the loading? You surely do.

It is indeed requested to check the settings of a container. But very often without power connection one cannot check. Our clients are advised to write the shipping line that settings could not be checked due to lack of battery in the container. We see that most shipping lines appreciate such reaction and double check the settings. On top of that we also advise to have the booking confirmation checked by an other person than the one who made the reservation. Just to be sure one does not overlook eventual mistakes.
