Inclusive Spaces For Neurodivergent Kids ??
Teachers, we know you want to build a classroom environment that feels welcoming to all children, especially your neurodivergent ones.?
But it’s no secret they likely have different needs than other students.?
How can you make your neurodivergent children feel comfortable and a part of the group??
Expectations for Kindness
Helping your neurodivergent students feel welcomed in your classroom starts with you on the first day! Take some time to discuss with your class that every person is unique, and each of them will need different things to be the very best student they can be.?
Remind them as well that even if someone acts differently from them, everyone always deserves kindness and respect in your classroom.?
New Tools
Neurodivergent children may need specific tools to thrive, such as alternative seating options. If those aren’t available at your school, invest in small fidget toys for your classroom or encourage neurodivergent students to bring items that help them feel more relaxed and able to focus.?

Try a New Approach?
Typical classroom experiences can (and should!) look different when you have neurodivergent students. For example, storytime could include breaks for dancing to music, acting out the story, or moving to other seats. This can help children with ADHD or autism give their brains a break, move their bodies, and process the story in a new way.?
Ask What They Need
Above all else, the best thing you can do is not assume you know what a child needs. Take the time to find out what makes school fun for them and when they feel the most engaged. From there, you two can deduce what is most helpful throughout the day, making them feel welcomed and included.?
