Being part of someone's travel plans can be fun. It's like you "travel" with them.
When I was still in my first semester in college in Brazil, I got an Internship at a student exchange organization (Intercambio Cultural). It was exciting to learn about International Education. There are many different programs, rules and nuances of the business. But more important, there are people that desire life changing experiences.
The first product that caught my interest was the Work & Travel Program. We had to speak English to understand the instructions and interact with others. I didn't know anything about traveling to another country, but I had a boss that believed in my potential.
In my first month at the Internship, the training was to shadow my boss around the office. I paid close attention when he spoke to our clients. He made it so easy for people to understand it. One day, we were busy and I decided to help a client because I did not want her to wait. He (my boss) was in a meeting with the another client. I made my first sale!
My boss was glad to see that I was learning that quick. We celebrated the successful deal. That meant an opportunity to be part of the client's dream to travel to America and that was a good feeling to have.
Our clientele was growing...but I wanted more. I told my mentor (boss) that I wanted to visit the English schools in the small cities to educate them about International Education. He supported my idea and we gathered marketing materials.
In just three days of visits to prospects I was able to find a niche of people interested in English as Second Language programs. I had a group of twenty five people going to Toronto. I helped them with Visa documents, airfare, and communicated the agendas with the parents. I wanted to to ensure their children would be happy while visiting Toronto.
The entire process was a lot of information to learn. There were so many small details that had to be perfect. If I made one mistake, their Visa could be declined without any explanation. One student came back after the program and told me about the many different experiences that she had in Toronto. Her joy transformed my job into passion.
