How do we learn to use and adapt impersonal curriculum materials in ways that allow us to meet our students' needs and address multiple standards and objectives? (Cirillo, 2009, p.3). This is a perpetual question and like an onion, the answers keep peeling off one layer after another! I do not think that anyone has found all the answers for the same.
?As per Cirillo (2009, p.3) "well-prepared teachers have developed a sense of 'where they are going' and how they and their students are going to get there". I always knew that I want to make maths classroom accessible to all students. it is the ‘how’ that has been a continuous search.
?I discovered that “inclusive environments can enhance educational practices and benefit students with and without disabilities” (Scanlon, 2012, p.1). Hence I focused on whole class accommodations in my curriculum.

Teachers of mathematics will find that simple changes to the presentation of mathematical concepts enable students to gain a clearer understanding of the process rather than a merely mechanically correct response. (Lock, 1996, para 2 )
?Time limit for work
Time Limit: There is always a tug of war about how much maths should be done in a day as classwork or homework. I changed this to ‘how much time should students spend thinking about maths?’ Depending on the grade I was with I asked for 20 to 40 min for HW and switched the work to thinking about maths. Finishing the problem set was rendered not necessary.?
“Accommodations tend to be most effective when integrated in the curriculum and aligned with teachers’ “routines and procedures””, (Scanlon, 2012, p.5). For me, adaptations in curriculum as a natural and organic flow in the face of having diverse groups of students. After multiple trials, they became a part of my curriculum.

2 年An important concern today is about the falling standards of language competency in the students- it lacks precision and understanding of the contextually appropriate choice of words and expression . They may recognise the importance of what you are doing with them and for them but their articulation of their ideas and thoughts is seriously compromised ??

2 年Monica Kochar , great article! It makes perfect sense to teach different ways to perceive information because students or anyone learning does not perceive information the same way. Education has been teaching one way to perceive information far to long, especially math. Math and I have never seen eye to eye. Humans are born with a need to problem solve and not all see the solution the same. It makes sense to teach different ways to see so each can fully unsderstand. Teachers like you are revolutionaries that are opening better ways to teach. Visuals have always drawn me to keep my focus using differnt colors and objects. I also like stories, rhymes, and songs to help me remember. My favorite teachers are the ones that taught me different ways to come to the same solution. ?????

2 年Very useful , thanks I'm teaching graphic engineering to few students. Started with modeling first , now they are interested in shapes and views much more. The chapters sequence was broken for the students .
