(1) The Man Who Broke Capitalism by David Gelles. Recasting the legacy of America's first celebrity CEO. (2) The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. Especially prescient given today's post-Roe America. I found myself thinking about this book weeks after I finished it. (3) Northern Spy by Flynn Berry. Retro thriller about two sisters and the wrath of the IRA. (4) The Collective by Alison Gaylin. Quick and addictive thriller about mothers who have lost their children organizing for revenge. (5) The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller. A single day in Cape Cod. A marriage in trouble. Loads of secrets. (6) Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie. Spectacular debut novel about Nori, the child of a married Japanese aristocrat and her African American GI lover during WWII. Explores racism, family and hope. (7) Beloved by Toni Morrison. I read this classic book every summer and notice something new every time. An unflinching look at slavery, heartbreak and motherhood. (8) A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth. Another classic I just discovered. An epic love story set in India in the 1950's. (9) Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah. A beautifully written tale of a mysterious child who appears from nowhere and teaches two strangers how to love again. (10) What Happened to the Bennetts by Lisa Scottoline. The Bennetts are an ordinary family on their way home one night when they're carjacked. Their teenage daughter is killed and they're abruptly put into witness protection, prompting all of their neighbors to wonder what happened.
