AI might be having its iPhone moment thanks to Sam Altman and OpenAI releasing ChatGPT last week…aka “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” - Arthur C. Clarke. I don't disagree about the paradigm shift and think Paul Graham’s quote below sums it up. Sam and OpenAI have been doing pioneering work in this space. Paraphrasing some especially fascinating aspects of Sam’s vision for this paradigm shift, here are 3 ideas / considerations that resonated with me: 1: On-demand access to intelligence, super fast + super cheap Sam believes there’s enough information on the Internet available today as a knowledge base to create AGI. Enabling on-demand access to this level of intelligence has profound implications on the way we research, develop points of view, debate the right path forward, execute and iterate on ideas.? 2: Benefits generated by those with a deep, nuanced understanding of a challenge / opportunity space (not necessarily those with technical knowledge) who approach things with a beginner’s mind. I’ve written periodically about the curse of knowledge where folks that are too close to a complex topic have difficulty communicating with those who don’t have a certain baseline level understanding. Sam’s thoughts on this along with the benefits that will accrue to those approaching these tools with a beginner’s mind are fascinating. Maybe that’s why ChatGPT is inspiring so many operators, practitioners etc beyond the deep tech community. 3: Cognitive labor won’t necessarily get replaced but will get hugely augmented.? Using the creative process as an example and describing the difference between what Sam is capable of using Dall*E vs what an artist can do with it reinforces the augmentation available to us today. Creatives will benefit from much faster cycle times as they will be able to pull from an infinite amount of inspiration and move through which ideas to go deeper on vs those to move past in an exponentially faster and more impactful way. Thinking about the impact on the types of workflows within the creative process and beyond is breathtaking. Humans + Machines not Humans vs Machines.
