It’s National Pedestrian Safety Month

While New Jersey saw pedestrian fatalities drop last year, they are trending upward in 2024. As of October 4, 147 pedestrians had been killed in crashes this year, 33 more than the year before. You can help us raise awareness and reduce fatalities.

The NJTPA coordinates Street Smart NJ, a statewide pedestrian safety campaign that municipalities, communities, schools and nonprofits have participated in to help educate people about the behaviors that contribute to fatal and serious injury crashes.

We have sample social media posts you can share and regularly post information about trends and events, like National Pedestrian Safety Month.

Get involved in pedestrian safety efforts in our region. Connect with our Street Smart NJ Coordinator William Yarzab on LinkedIn or at [email protected] to learn more about Street Smart NJ. Pedestrian fatalities are on the rise. Let's take action and increase awareness.

Street Smart NJ sign that reads, "Drive Smart: We move over for safety. Four feet. It's the law." It shows a car with space between it and silhouettes of people walking, biking, riding a scooter and in a wheelchair.
Street Smart NJ educates people about NJ's Move Over Law and other pedestrian-related laws.

Active Subregional Studies

We refer to the 13 counties and two cities on the NJTPA Board as our “subregions.” Every year we provide funding for the subregions to conduct planning studies that help shape transportation in our region. There are four studies underway and the public is encouraged to get involved! Click the titles below to learn more:?

Middlesex County Road Safety Audits – The county is conducting safety assessments to identify potential improvements at five high crash locations and advance recommendations from its Vision Zero Action Plan, adopted in 2022.?

Somerset County Electric Vehicle Charging and Suitability Analysis – This study will identify optimal locations for electric vehicle charging infrastructure throughout the county.??

Warren County Comprehensive Complete Streets Policy Implementation Plan – This study will help the county develop a plan to design, maintain and operate roads that are safe, equitable and sustainable. ?

West Hudson Circulation and Connectivity Study – This study will evaluate transportation challenges and identify ways to improve accessibility for all road users?in and around the western part of Hudson County.?

What Happens to Gas Stations when Electric Vehicles Rule the Road

The image portrays a Valero gas station with two pumps prominently in view. Both pumps are equipped with digital screens and card readers. A man in a blue shirt and jeans stands beside the left pump, leaning against a trash bin, with arms crossed. A dark red SUV with a visible license plate is parked at the right pump, fueling.
The reality of supply and demand will inevitably lead to some contraction. It’s happening already.
