On November 29, 2024, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted its inaugural Open Day, marking a significant milestone in the country’s diplomatic journey. Coinciding with Kenya’s 60th anniversary of diplomatic practice, it offered a unique opportunity to reflect on the nation’s global presence and aspirations. Under the theme “Shaping the Future of Kenyan Diplomacy Through Enhanced Public Inclusivity,” the Open Day aimed to foster transparency, public awareness, and engagement with the Ministry’s work. This initiative highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to bridging the gap between diplomacy and citizen involvement. Lynda Ouma, MPRSK and I had the privilege of attending the event and similarly co-authoring this article.
Bringing Diplomacy Closer to the People
The Open Day served as a platform for the Ministry to demystify its operations and engage directly with the public. The Ministry aimed to enhance understanding of Kenya's foreign policy and its implications for national development by welcoming various stakeholders, including the public, students, international relations practitioners, and members of the Diplomatic Corps in Nairobi.
Interactive displays, exhibitions, and Q&A sessions demonstrated the tangible impacts of diplomacy on everyday life. The focus on inclusivity and accessibility ensured that the event resonated with its diverse audience, inspiring many to view diplomacy as a shared responsibility.
Target Audience Relevance
The organisers meticulously tailored the Open Day to cater to a diverse audience.
? Public: For many attendees, this was an opportunity to learn about Kenya’s foreign policy and its role on the global stage. Interactive displays and presentations provided insights into how diplomatic efforts impact everyday life.

? Diplomatic Corps: For diplomats stationed in Nairobi, the Open Day offered a platform for collaboration and engagement with Kenyan officials. It reinforced existing relationships while fostering new partnerships.

Interactive Experiences
The open day featured immersive experiences through historical displays, exhibitions of notable documents, and engaging activities like “Fun with Flags,” where visitors tested their knowledge of various national flags. These interactive elements made learning about diplomacy enjoyable and accessible.
Future Diplomats Q&A Sessions
The “Future Diplomats” section was particularly popular among students. It provided insights into career paths within diplomacy through personal stories from junior diplomats who shared their journeys into foreign service. By engaging citizens directly, the Open Day fostered a sense of patriotism among attendees. Many expressed pride in Kenya’s achievements on the global stage and recognised their role as informed citizens who can contribute to national discourse.
Lessons Learned
Feedback from participants indicated that, while many appreciated the informative nature of the event, there were suggestions for improvement. Some attendees recommended more interactive workshops focused on specific aspects of foreign policy or diplomacy skills training for youth.
Looking Ahead to 2025
While the inaugural event laid a strong foundation, its relevance extends beyond the celebrations of 2024. As Kenya faces new challenges and opportunities in 2025, sustained efforts to foster public engagement in diplomacy will be critical. As experts in event management, communication, and innovation, we propose several actionable strategies for future open days:
1. Annual Engagements: Establishing this event as an annual occurrence will ensure ongoing dialogue between the Ministry and citizens.
2. Enhanced Interactive Workshops: Incorporate more hands-on workshops that allow participants to engage deeply with topics related to foreign policy and diplomacy skills.
3. Broader Outreach Campaigns: Leverage digital platforms to reach younger audiences and more diverse audiences.
4. Feedback Mechanisms: Post-event, implement structured feedback systems to continuously improve future engagements based on attendee input.
5. Collaborative Partnerships: Engage with educational institutions and NGOs to co-host events or workshops expanding reach and impact.
By embracing these recommendations and prioritising transparency and public engagement, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs can strengthen its relationship with citizens while reinforcing its position as a global leader in diplomacy. The inaugural Open Day set a strong precedent for future initiatives that can inspire generations, ensuring that every Kenyan feels connected to the nation’s global journey.
