I felt the weight of rejection and exclusion stemming from my family's subtle and, at times, painfully overt homophobia. These unspoken prejudices, veiled in their words and actions, pierced my soul, leaving me yearning for love and acceptance within the very confines of my kinship. In those moments, it seemed difficult to find solace and authenticity when the love I sought was withheld or tainted by the shackles of societal biases.


The complexities of my Black identity did not escape me as I grappled with the insidious grip of colourism—both within the domestic sphere and in the broader tapestry of Society. The echoes of whispered comments, the unspoken preferences, and the differential treatment based on the hue of my skin chipped away at my sense of self-worth, leaving scars of inadequacy and self-rejection. It was a struggle that extended far beyond the boundaries of my family, seeping into the collective consciousness of a world that often failed to recognise the beauty and resilience of all shades of Blackness.


In the tapestry of my life, the intricate thread of dyslexia wove its way, amplifying the challenges I faced in my journey toward self-acceptance. Dyslexia, often misunderstood and stigmatised, carried the weight of misconceptions about my intelligence and academic capabilities. At times family and Society's unforgiving gaze branded me as "unintelligent" or "not academic enough," planting seeds of doubt that took root in the fertile ground of my developmental years. These seeds sprouted, intertwining with the messages from my loved ones, making it arduous to untangle the webs of self-doubt and genuinely love the person that lay within.


Unresolved Trauma: The Lingering Shadows of Caregivers

Within the intricate tapestry of my struggles, it became evident that the unresolved trauma carried by my primary, secondary, and tertiary caregivers played a significant role in shaping the hurdles I faced. Their battles with trauma, whether experiences of racism, colourism, or stigmatisation of learning disabilities, seeped into the very foundation of the family unit, perpetuating harmful patterns.


The scars of racism my caregivers bore cast long shadows over our interactions, dimming the light of unconditional acceptance. Their wounds, inflicted by a society riddled with biases and discrimination, unknowingly found their way into our familial bonds. In their struggle to cope, their self-hatred and internalised oppression unwittingly manifested as subtle or overt forms of racism reverberating within our shared space. Such words and actions chipped away at my sense of self-worth, making it challenging to forge healthy connections based on love, acceptance, and genuine empathy.


Cultural Consciousness: Nurturing Healing Relationships

Cultural consciousness fosters an environment where open dialogue and active listening take centre stage. It encourages individuals to examine their biases, unlearn oppressive narratives, and cultivate empathy and understanding for others' experiences.
