Are these in-demand skills part of your workforce strategy for 2023?

We are all eager to learn and grow, but there are constraints, and some things simply cannot be taught, Coding languages and project management skills are not among them.

This is for the employers out there. If you've been considering what skills your employees will need to meet your company's future needs, Coursera, which is an online education company, has some suggestions based on data from organizations using the platform.

Let’s look at digital skills

While digital skills are, unsurprisingly, in high demand today among employers, they are indeed rapidly evolving, according to Coursera's Job Skills report of 2023, which details the skills that grew the fastest in 2022. Only two of the top ten fastest-growing digital skills in 2021 (data visualization and user experience design) are among the top ten in 2022.

In 2022, the fastest-growing skills were Scrum software development and data visualization. Customer success tools, e-commerce, CRM software, and user experience design were ranked 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th, in that order.

People skills are as important as the digital skills

Don’t be deceived, technologists and AI robots aren't taking over the world yet. More needs to be done for that to happen, and as we wait for that to happen, we have to continue upskilling and improving our workforce.?According to the report, soft skills, or "human skills," are also important. These did not vary significantly from year to year: Six of the top ten for 2023 were also in the top ten the previous year.

Organizational development (3rd), people management (5th), culture (6th), and collaboration are the fastest-growing newcomers (7th). In 2023, storytelling, change management, and influencing are ranked 1st, 2nd, and 4th, respectively.

A recent report from Pearson, which is another education company, outlined a similar set of "power skills" that will be important in the near future. The report included communication and collaboration, as well as other soft skills like cultural and social intelligence.

How prepared are you?

Given the rapidly changing nature of work and the economic environment, human resource leaders can use this data to guide their workforce strategies, ranging from recruiting to learning and development (L&D). They can also use it to justify their L&D budgets or other training-related resources, that are linked to their relationship with future growth.
