IMSS Inaugurates New Medical Facility in Zacatecas

The Mexican government inaugurated the IMSS Family Medicine Unit (UMF) No. 58 in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, designed to enhance preventive healthcare services and address the needs of 46,094 residents in the region. During the inauguration, authorities announced a forthcoming 216-bed regional hospital equipped with advanced imaging and diagnostic technologies, set to expand healthcare access in the state.

The UMF No. 58 facility features six general medicine offices and three specialty nursing offices, bringing essential healthcare services closer to communities, as reported by Mexico's Ministry of Health. "This Family Medicine Unit is a model that we intend to replicate nationally," says David Kershenobich, Minister of Health.

Zoé Robledo, Director, IMSS, highlights the importance of family medicine in managing chronic illnesses that reduce life expectancy, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, as reported by IMSS. “About 80% of our family medicine consultations address chronic-degenerative diseases,” says Robledo. He emphasizes that prevention-oriented primary care could lead to healthier aging, reducing the years individuals spend in poor health.

IMSS’s new facility strengthens the role of specialized nurses in preventive care, diagnostic support, and continuous medical admissions. Robledo notes that IMSS family doctors handle a wide range of issues, from family planning to senior care, aligning with Mexico's goal of improving health outcomes through comprehensive care.

The UMF No. 58 represents a core initiative in the government’s national healthcare strategy, focusing on preventive care and accessibility. "There is nothing more valuable than our health," says Kershenobich.?

President Claudia Sheinbaum aims to make IMSS-Bienestar the central pillar of the administration’s healthcare efforts, as reported by Mexico’s Ministry of Health (SSA). Her initiatives aim to provide social security coverage to all Mexican citizens, regardless of their affiliation with existing public health institutions.
