Impulse Compaction Specialist Terra-Mix Relies on "Heavy Hitters" from HD Hyundai

Building a comfortable tomorrow.
Founded in 2001, TERRA-MIX Bodenstabilisierungs GmbH , based in Westmannst?tten, Austria, has developed impulse compaction technology for dynamic soil stabilization. Compared to traditional methods of ground improvement, impulse compaction offers three main advantages: time saving, cost reduction, and resource conservation by utilizing existing soil material.
Impulse compaction has been known since 1982, and Terra-Mix, in collaboration with TU Wien, has further refined the method. So how does it work? A drop weight with a defined mass of 9,000 kg is repeatedly dropped onto a steel plate from a specified height at a high strike frequency (40 to 60 strikes/min), compacting the ground with each impact.
"The advantage of this type of soil compaction is the GPS-supported verification of the compaction success," explains Martin Müller, who is responsible for technology and procurement on the Terra-Mix management team.
According to Müller, the compaction process developed by his company boasts the smallest carbon footprint among all ground improvement methods—a crucial factor for many clients, such as Jaguar Land Rover at their new plant in Nitra, Slovakia. Heavy hydraulic excavators from Hyundai, supplied by Austrian HD Hyundai dealer M?rtlbauer Baumaschinen Vertriebs GmbH , are at the core of the technology. Terra-Mix handles the compaction technology, including modifications to the excavator boom, in-house. The main deployment areas for these South Korean machines are Austria, Germany, and several Eastern European countries.
Martin Müller adds, "For us, modern, fuel-efficient hydraulic excavators are essential as carrier machines. Hyundai's 52-ton excavators impress with their excellent steel construction, a stable undercarriage, and powerful hydraulics to drive the compaction unit." Currently, five large Hyundai excavators are in operation, with two more scheduled for 2024. Terra-Mix has developed the compaction equipment for impulse compaction and integrates it into a complete unit.
HD Hyundai Advantage: Detachable Counterweight
The hydraulically detachable counterweight is a significant convenience. It increases flexibility and simplifies the transport of these large machines on public roads, enabling faster transport because special permits are easier to obtain for split loads.
The most powerful HD Hyundai crawler excavator currently impresses with a Stage V engine, new design, and extensive new and updated components and controls. The Hyundai HX crawler excavator series, with operating weights from 12 to 52 tons, are ideal carrier machines.
