Improving Watershed Health in Western Kansas in Partnership with Kansas Alliance for Wetlands & Streams

@Global Water Challenge (GWC) is proud to highlight the work of @Kansas Alliance for Wetlands & Streams (KAWS), whose mission is to work with partners to protect and restore wetlands, streams, rivers, prairies, wildlife and riparian habitat.

GWC is partnering with KAWS through its Cargill Currents North America program. Together, we are improving the watershed health of the Arkansas River through public awareness and outreach and the removal of invasive species.

In the Arkansas River Basin, invasive species have root systems that tap into the groundwater sources, reducing water availability for surrounding nature and communities. With the support of Cargill Currents North America and a partnership with Ducks Unlimited, KAWS is removing invasive species across 667 acres of land, resulting in up to 67 million gallons of water per year being returned to the Arkansas River alluvial aquifer in western Kansas.

The Cargill Currents North America partnership also supported the Arkansas River Water Quality Summit (ARKWIN), an event co-convened by KAWS to promote multi-state conservation action within the Arkansas River basin.
