Improving Processing Speed is the Most Sought After Skill Today

The mind of a goaltender can be thought of as similar to a computer in many ways. Just as a computer processes and stores information in its cache, a goaltender's mind must quickly process and retain various pieces of information in order to function at an optimal level. This includes recognizing set plays coming from the opposition, identifying right and left handed players, understanding the speed of players, and being able to navigate through various on-ice scenarios such as screens, deflections, and common scoring situations.

One key aspect of a goaltender's mental processing is the ability to recognize set plays. These are predetermined patterns of play that are often used by the opposition in order to create scoring chances. For example, a team may use a set play to set up a one-timer for a player in the slot, or to create a passing lane for a defensemen at the point. Recognizing these plays and being able to anticipate them is crucial for a goaltender, as it allows them to be in the proper position to make a save.

In order to recognize set plays, a goaltender must be able to read the body language and positioning of the opposition. This requires a high level of awareness and attention to detail, as the goaltender must be able to identify subtle cues that indicate a set play is about to unfold. For example, a defensemen may give a subtle nod to a teammate before moving the puck to the point, signalling that a shot is imminent. By recognizing this cue, the goaltender can anticipate the shot and be in position to make the save.

Another important aspect of a goaltender's mental processing is the ability to distinguish between right and left handed players. This is important because the direction in which a player shoots the puck can often be influenced by their handedness. For example, a right handed player is more likely to shoot to the goaltender's left side, while a left handed player is more likely to shoot to the right. By recognizing the handedness of players, a goaltender can better anticipate the direction of a shot and be in position to make the save.

In addition to recognizing set plays and identifying the handedness of players, a goaltender must also be able to understand the speed of players. This is important because the speed at which a player moves can influence the trajectory and velocity of their shot. For example, a player who is moving at a high speed is more likely to take a harder and more accurate shot than a player who is moving more slowly. By understanding the speed of players, a goaltender can better anticipate the strength and accuracy of a shot and be in position to make the save.

Finally, a goaltender must be able to navigate through various on-ice scenarios such as screens, deflections, and common scoring situations. Screens occur when an opposing player positions themselves between the puck and the goaltender, obstructing the goaltender's view of the shot. Deflections occur when the puck is redirected off of another player's stick or body before reaching the goaltender. Common scoring situations include power play opportunities, breakaways, and two-on-one situations. In each of these scenarios, the goaltender must be able to anticipate the shot and be in position to make the save.

Overall, the mind of a goaltender is highly complex and requires a high level of mental processing in order to function effectively. Just like a computer, a goaltender must be able to quickly access and retain information in order to make the right decision every time. By recognizing set plays, identifying right and left handed players, understanding the speed of players, and navigating through various on-ice scenarios, a goaltender is able to consistently make saves and help their team succeed.
