Improving inclusivity in accounting
Creating inclusive workspaces and environments is not just about checking a box in a DEI statement - it's a fundamental necessity for any organization, including accounting firms, wanting to remain relevant and plan for future growth. Promoting inclusivity provides accounting firms with a stronger platform for recruiting top talent, reduces turnover, and can even deliver better results for clients.
To help you achieve these goals, we're providing some deeper insight and tips on how you can foster inclusivity in your organization.
What is inclusivity?
First, let's define the term. "Inclusivity" refers to a workplace or work environment enabling all employees to make meaningful contributions, feel valued, and actively advance their careers. Within Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, inclusivity more commonly refers to bringing in, welcoming, and accommodating people from underrepresented or underserved groups.
Why is inclusivity in accounting important?

How to foster inclusivity in accounting firms and organizations
Creating a more inclusive environment begins by knowing where your organization stands, what's currently in place, and establishing clear goals and objectives for change.
Some strategies to promote inclusivity can include mentorship programs, promoting support networks, and establishing top-down inclusivity.
Mentorship programs are an excellent way to pair new staff with experienced professionals who understand the barriers they may face. This can help new staff navigate their careers and feel a greater sense of belonging.
Promoting support networks for employees across specific demographics within the organization can help underrepresented accountants feel more secure and empowered. At the same time, it's also important to encourage engagement with external, larger organizations like the Accounting & Financial Women's Alliance (AFWA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).
Most importantly, inclusivity must start at the top of the organization. By building and implementing strategies, having clear, measurable goals in place, and creating open lines of communication with your team, you can create inclusive environments that will benefit both your employees and your organization.
