The cost of healthcare in rural Haiti was found to vary widely, even inside the same health organization. A pioneering cost accounting system co-developed by Robert Kaplan was called in to determine the cause. Harvard Business School's Dr. Mahek Shah and Professor Kaplan worked with Partners in Health (PIH) to determine total cost of care for 10 different visits across 5 facilities.
This enabled change in how PIH fundraises, conveying their impact to donors and partners. It demonstrates that value of healthcare can be quantified even in the poorest country in the world. Improving value in low-income countries is even more critical since you're constrained by resources and funding. Yet it makes the hard work that much more meaningful and impactful.
