Improving the Health of Your Nonprofit through People Manager Development and Enablement

Improving the Health of Your Nonprofit through People Manager Development and Enablement

About the People Manager Role

People managers have a hard job.?

They have to:?

  • Set goals
  • Manage resources
  • Support real humans who are not always easy to support
  • Keep everything moving on time and within budget so the organization can meet its goals

An Example of a People Manager Role

Let's think about some people manager roles in nonprofits.??

I'll use the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium as an example.?

According to their strategic plan, their mission is to connect people to wildlife, inspiring communities to conserve nature for future generations.??

Some of their objectives related to this are to:?

  • Develop education offerings to reach diverse audiences
  • Increase empathy towards wildlife
  • Better communicate their conservation and research work and their experiences?

Imagine that you are a people manager at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium who manages frontline staff working in the gift shop.??

What does that look like???

Your team has inventory that you have to stay on top of, they're handling cash, you're interacting with 3000 people a day, and most of your team members are part-time staff.??

If this were you, you would be pulled in a million different directions.?

Your job is to help your team reach their goals. They may have sales goals and they may also have goals that fit into the larger vision and strategy of the zoo. You also have to help them manage their schedules, order new inventory, and the list goes on. You can start to see how this might feel overwhelming.??

Learning and Development's Role in People Manager Development

As L&D, we have to be able to not just develop their skills, but empower them to do their work effectively, even with their day-to-day constraints of time and resources.

Now you might not be working at a zoo.?

You might be developing people managers at a nonprofit hospital, an education-focused organization, an organization focused on immigration or housing, or even an industry association.??

All of these environments have people managers who want to do a great job and who are working within these constraints.?

That's why I've invited Kamaria Scott , an I/O psychologist focused on people manager development and enablement, to join me on episode 120 of the podcast.

She’s sharing how you can improve the health of your organization by investing in your people managers.

We'll discuss what we mean by manager development and enablement, what the common challenges are, and recommended solutions so you can invest in your people managers throughout the year.

You are absolutely right- people managers do have a hard job! In addition to all the things they are doing to support their people, they also have to do their own work too. Giving them the tools to lead well-themselves and others- is key!
