Improving the Finish of Type 1L Concrete Mixes
The concrete industry is on mission to reduce its carbon footprint and increase the environmental friendliness of its materials. In recent years, the result has been an increase in the use of Portland limestone, or Type 1L, cement.? In last week’s article, we discussed some of the challenges that contractors experience with mixes containing this product.? We’re going to continue this conversation this, as we discuss some specific problems that can occur with PLC and decorative concrete finishes.?
PLC & Bleed Water
Last week, we mentioned that the limestone in the cement can tend to absorb more water than traditional cement molecules. This creates mixes that may not have enough bleed water to maintain the moisture on the surface level of the concrete. While excess bleed water is not good for the concrete, a certain amount of water on the surface layer of the concrete can be very helpful during the finishing process.? Without this surface water, the concrete may become sticky and harder to work a trowel or float. And when what little free water on the surface that remains evaporates, it increases the risk of crusting, cracking, and crazing. This creates significant problems for stamped concrete, polished concrete floors, and a variety of other decorative concrete applications.?

Finishing Admixtures
The good news is that the solution to these issues presented by PLC concrete is the same as it as always been - a high quality finishing admixture. Finishing admixtures are designed to improve the finishability of the concrete, reduce water loss on the surface, and decrease the risk of cracking crusting and crazing.? There are two main types of finishing admixtures: evaporation retarders and finishing aids.? Both products can be can be very beneficial to use whe working with limestone cement mixes. Check out this video below to learn more about how they work and which one to choose for your next concrete project.
