A field-deployable device or system presents particular challenges for your buyers / users of that device or system.
Although your product was shipped into the field to the trailhead in an OTS (off-the-shelf) transport case (suitable for shipping), once the device or system gets to the start of the 'man-portable' portion of deployment, that same transport case will typically increase your weight burden by 80%, and the bulk-burden by about this same amount.
This typically translates into TWICE as many field personnel needed to deploy compared to deploying the device or system by itself (unprotected).
The irony of high-value man-portable device protection is that such protection typically ends the moment the device or system's safety relies on Human hands.
Off-the-shelf protection often ends at the vehicle's storage compartments or at the trailhead.
Since 2010, a US manufacturer has evolved three different means to extend protection into the field using unique, molded, Featherweight Tactile Composites geared specifically for high-value, relatively low-quantity devices or systems.
OEM customers can choose which form of this unique technology to use:
A 'Form-fitting Vest' allowing use-in-place protection, a 'Form-fitting Field Case', or a 'Form-fitting Holster' each designed to minimize bulk, weight and maximize ease-of-use for the user
.
Imagine extending protection into the field at 1/4 (or less) the weight and 1/2 (or less) of the bulk of a conventional off-the-shelf protective solution.

Requiring typically 1/2 of the personnel needed to deploy a system means the expenditure for such an all-custom form-fitting solution is very quickly offset by the lower labor costs and lower risks of each deployment.

Think about it: All of the money you saved the customer by giving them an off-the-shelf solution could be quickly erased in just ONE deployment due to the HIGHER labor cost (& risks) of the extra people required to pack-in the extra weight & bulk of that OTS solution.

Author: Jeffrey D. Krause is a Co-founder of two long-time US manufacturers.
One was listed for 4 years by Deloitte as one of the US’s 500 fastest-growing companies, and was eventually acquired by multinational 'Teledyne'.
The main product, of which Jeffrey was only 1 of 2 people on the Patent, became featured as a minor character in the James Cameron IMAX film ‘Sanctum’.
That same product became at that time, the most widely-publicized case study in the history of ‘SolidWorks’ CAD software.
Founded his first physical manufacturing company at age 22, his current 13-yr-old company has DIRECT clients which include Lockheed-Martin, Teledyne-FLIR and several Medical manufacturers.

1 年Hi Jeff, Nice stuff! I particularly like the portable X-ray case design. And it is made in the USA. I still wish the sports bags/cases could have succeeded. Everyone loved the design due to not only the ID, but like your products, the formable, ligtweight & protective materials were very functional and attractive. Although Prince in particular was very interested, competing with imports and offshore material/labor costs were the defining issue at the time even though tennis was at its peak. Your products are attractive, applicable and obvously custom moldable to any valuable device.
