Improving the dental patient experience
Excellent communication and the patient experience
The January 7, 2022 article in US News & World Reports entitled, "9 Habits that are killing your teeth", set out the worst behaviors that damage teeth. These habits may not be surprising to dentists. What dentists often forget to do is ask patients which of the nine they do and guide patients to better oral health.
Do you know the nine worst offenders? Teeth grinding (bruxism); chewing ice; opening items using the teeth; thumb sucking; constant snacking (poor diet, too much sugar); brushing too hard; not using a mouth guard during sports; nail biting; and smoking.
How often do you talk with your patients about their oral health habits - good and bad? Are you prepared to offer suggestions to help them improve the good and reduce or spot the negative? This article offers tips to give you ideas about what to say.
Effective communication is an essential element of the patient experience as well as a relationship-building tool to encourage patient loyalty. Measuring the effectiveness of the patient experience is one element of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), the foundation of accreditation programs. Engaging in accreditation offers a structured review of the clinical and non-clinical health of dental practices, dental clinics, and dental hospitals.
