Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steels
The corrosion resistance of stainless steels is due to the highly-stable passive film that forms on its surface when exposed to an oxygen-containing environment.?
Stainless steel is low maintenance, and its resistance to oxidation and staining makes it an ideal material for many applications.?
How copper and nitrogen increase the pitting corrosion resistance?
Copper has been shown to significantly improve corrosion resistance of stainless steels, particularly in seawater and sulphuric acid containing environments.
The corrosion resistance of stainless steels is due to the highly-stable passive film that forms on its surface when exposed to an oxygen-containing environment. However, pitting corrosion resistance often initiates on or close to sulphide inclusions that happen to exist near the surface.
It is approved that the content of nitrogen in the passive layer is at least seven times more than balk material. In these circumstances, a highly stable protective nitride layer (Ni2Mo3N) is formed on the surface, which can protect the surface against localized corrosion and results in a decrease of dissolution of the passive layer.
In pit growth step: In case a pit is initiated at high potentials, nitrogen dissolves in the pit area and reacts with protons (H+) to produce an ammonium ion (according to the following reaction), which is an alkaline buffering substance that can control the localized pH in the pit. Thus, the pH in the pit will not reduce to the acidic values. This means that the autocatalytic effect of pitting corrosion would be eliminated.
