Improving Conditions in the Corn Belt
US Western Corn Belt
- US corn rated in good-to-excellent condition rose 2% week-over-week to 62%
- In top producer, Iowa, the rating did actually decline 3% down to 61%, likely due to some drought increasing in the northwestern part of the state:
- Per the US Drought Monitor, about 10% of the state is in a moderate-severe drought
- The drier areas have been in the south where Ottumwa has seen just 2.54" of rain since the start of June, which is less than 20% of normal and a deficit of almost 11"
- Yesterday, showers did return to the region with more likely for Wednesday and Thursday
- While it turns drier for the weekend, conditions look to continue to improve as more rains are anticipated next week. This should boost soil moisture and aid corn development
