Improving Baseball

"Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too." - Yogi Berra

Baseball has been part of the American cultural landscape since the nineteenth century.

For many, playing - and watching - baseball was an integral part of their childhood.

Professional teams, from Single A minor leagues to MLB were part of their community.

When I was growing up, our home town team, The Cincinnati Reds, gave away tickets to Junior and Senior High School kids who made straight A's.

Granted, they were in the 'nose bleed' section and were probably going to go unsold anyway.

But, that didn't make me any less proud to win them and go to the games.

Over the decades, there have even been many movies made with baseball as the subject or setting.

  • Field of Dreams
  • The Sandlot
  • The Natural
  • Moneyball
  • MANY Others

All these movies that feature baseball are a testament to how popular the game is.

Or, at least...was.

**Btw, what is your all-time favorite baseball movie? Share in the comments.**

The world has changed.

Things move much faster in the modern world and the slow pace of baseball has caused it to diminish in popularity.

Certainly, the rules have been altered slightly in an attempt to make it a faster moving game.

Most notably, there is now a pitch clock.

Still, it got me thinking that there have to be ways to improve baseball.

So, that is why as part of last week's LinkedIn Live show, Thriving in the Modern Economy, that I co-host with Chad Johnson , our guest Harris Fanaroff and I came up with some ideas for improving the game.

Using the Anchor Term method of Purposeful Creative Thinking, Harris and I both shared a couple of ideas for improving baseball.

Our Anchor Term was Baseball Improvement which we combined with various random words. (see the random words we had to choose from below)

Ideas From Harris:

Picture - Baseball Improvement

When they get to the ball park, all fans ages 8-13 share who their favorite player is.

Then, at some point during the game, a random drawing is held and the kid whose name is chosen gets to have their picture made with that player on the field.

Band - Baseball Improvement

Like in football when the home team scores a touchdown, every time a player hits a homerun, the band plays a team fight song.

Ideas From Me

Baseball Improvement – Furniture?

Hold a lottery in which all folks in attendance at games are entered into a random drawing that occurs at the end of the first inning.

The winner (or winners) have the option to see the rest of the game from a luxury box with all amenities included.

Baseball Improvement – Radio

Make a fantasy experience where fans get to announce the game for an inning.

Those interested, submit their case for why they should be chosen.

These entries are sorted through and the top entries are published on the team’s site and social media pages.

Visitors to the site and pages vote on which entry they like best.

A single elimination tournament could be held as well with several rounds of voting. This would generate buzz around the contest and team itself. More merchandise and ticket sales would result.

?

Something similar could be done for sitting in the dugout during a game.

Today's Cincinnati Reds have a team tradition of putting a helmet and cape on a player who has just hit a homerun when he returns to the dugout.

A winner who gets to sit in the dugout could be the one to hand the cape and helmet to the player; thereby getting on the jumbotron and the TV broadcast of the game.

Here are the random words Harris and I had to choose from to combine with our Anchor Term, Baseball Improvement:

Furniture Picture

Bat Pollution

Ice Radio

Summer Zipper

Shirt Band

What ideas could you come up with by combining those words with Baseball Improvement?

How can you use that Purposeful Creative Thinking method to come up with ideas for improving your business or work?
