Improve Your EV Traction Inverter Performance with HPD Series SiC Power Modules from Leapers Semiconductor

With the announcement of some of the EU countries to ban the sale of fuel vehicles by 2035 and rising oil prices, the new energy vehicles have attracted more and more attention. How to make the charging time of new energy vehicles shorter and the endurance mileage longer is the main challenge for major car companies.

800 V high-voltage platform was introduced to comply with the above-mentioned challenges. Normally, there are three types of high-voltage system architectures that are expected to achieve high-power fast charging, and the whole high voltage system is expected to become the mainstream. The whole system, i.e., 800 V power battery + 800 V motor, electronic control + 800 V OBC, DC/DC, PDU + 800 V air conditioner, PTC, etc.

For high-end electric vehicles, besides the demand for battery life and fast charging, high-performance requirements such as super power and acceleration are also the goals pursued by major electric vehicle manufacturers as the focus of differentiation.

In response to the system requirements of high-end electric vehicles, Leapers Semiconductor launched HPD series SiC power modules with high current density that can meet the 800 V high-voltage platform for the whole vehicle. The product has completed the bench load test this April, and the phase current capability of the module can reach up to 850V 650 Arms.

The design and application are simple and convenient, which can help customers solve complex system problems caused by multi-motor coupling and module parallel connection. On top of that HPD series SiC power modules have completed the power cycle test with more than 60,000 cycles, which is much higher than 45,000 cycles required by the vehicle level standard. At present, HPD series SiC power modules have been well recognized by many European high-end electric vehicle customers, and prototype testing and mass production have been carried out.

Leapers Semiconductor HPD series SiC power modules have such a very high current capability, mainly because of their design and development capabilities with many material, chip, and module design technologies. Compared with traditional SiC power modules, Leapers Semiconductor HPD series SiC power modules adopt the independent patent of ArcbondingTM power module technology, having higher current, lower turn-on and turn-off losses, which help the end customers reduce the number of components and mechanical parts of inverters.

The ArcbondingTM surface connection patent technology can ensure that when 6-10 SiC chips are connected in parallel, they can not only have very low parasitic resistance and inductance with excellent dynamic switching performance, but also can easily meet the high requirements of automotive-grade applications of consistency and high reliability standards.

Based on the current requirements for the improvement of battery life and dynamic performance of pure electric passenger and commercial vehicles, higher efficiency and less parts and materials are required to further improve the power density of inverters and electric drive assemblies. The mass-produced HPD series SiC power modules for 800 V systems lead the application of SiC power modules in the field of electric vehicles with advanced technology

In HPD series Leapers Semiconductor uses silver sintering for die attach, high grade Si3N4 AMB substrates for higher thermal performance and robustness, and highly reliable epoxy resin potting technology. All this leads to:

·????????optimized internal low stray inductance and Arcbonding? structure, significantly improved dynamic switching performance;

·????????20-30% higher power density than modules from major competitors;

·????????lower thermal resistance.

Leapers Semiconductor’s HPD series SiC power modules deliver best performance for EV application. Thus, design engineers can expect to:

·????????have high power density for reduction of system size;

·????????provide increased power efficiency;

·????????increase battery utilization efficiency.

At the moment Leapers Semiconductor offers HPD series SiC power modules in Full Bridge topology with blocking voltage of 1200 V and current rating of 400-800 A to cover power requirements of 150kW to 400kW:
