Improve Compliance with Increased Education -?Annual Calendar Inside

I wasn't surprised to hear that most clinical educators, directors of clinical services, administrators, and even directors of compliance and quality didn't have a plan for educating staff on compliance topics and haven't routinely been providing education on these topics above orientation and annual training.

Some reasons why these topics don't get adequately covered with clinicians are because the topics are often challenging. and can be:

  • Very generic (Think HIPPA training, Corporate Compliance training)
  • Boring, not engaging content
  • Time-Consuming
  • Controversial (don't want to draw any extra attention to fraud allegations)

Another concern for large organizations is that the different branches or levels of leadership believe that someone else is responsible for ensuring compliance and certain education topics.

What may also be happening:

  • Corporate leaders may believe branch clinical leadership is executing the education at the branch level - until compliance concerns are escalated to the corporate level
  • The education plan is unclear about when education occurs and who delivers it or there is no education plan in place for the company or the agency
  • Belief that orientation and annual training are comprehensive enough to cover these topics adequately

Based on the feedback from hospice leaders, I created this downloadable compliance education calendar to help outline some topics that need to be covered routinely with clinicians.

Compliance Education Calendar

It has a prefilled calendar that can be used for ideas and to build a foundation, as well as tips for what to cover with clinicians and a blank copy for individualizing.

Make these topics more interesting and engaging:

  • Have a monthly training webinar for clinicians or leaders on each topic
  • Offer a lunch & learn
  • Do some small giveaways for in-person attendees to create excitement
  • Assign nursing continuing education credits to existing content
  • Create smaller content bites that are more digestible, send out short tips, tools, and quick review quizzes

I have found that often when presenting on compliance and regulatory topics, educators can overlook or minimize taking these concepts from information to application. One goal should be to help clinicians understand how this actually applies to their daily practice. (If I click a button to finish my visit, how could that be fraudulent or non-compliant with regulatory guidelines?)

I hope this calendar can help generate ideas and increase education on regulatory compliance and survey and accreditation readiness preparation for your agencies. I'd love to know if it was helpful, feel free to message me and share your feedback.
