Imprimis Supports Some Great Black Owned Restaurants in Dallas

At the end of our webinar on Structuring Communication Around Race and Racism, our speaker, Sophia Johnson, was asked “What can we do to make a difference in communicating our desire to end racism.” She said PPP, Protest (using our voice), Promote (insuring equal opportunity in hiring and promotions) and Purchase (buy from Black owned businesses). So we here at Imprimis started with “Purchase”. We love to eat so we decided to each find a different Black owned restaurant and either get takeout, delivery or dine in. The results were that we all found new places that we love and plan to continue to patronize. We used a list of Black owned restaurants from The Dallas Morning News.

Valerie: There is nothing I love more than fried chicken and French fries so went to the Medical District restaurant Hall’s Honey Fried Chicken. Hall’s was started by John Hall and now his daughter, Mackenzie Hall, is in the business. My yummy fried chicken came with fries, pickles, peppers, & bread. They also have chicken and waffles which I will save for next time. They have several locations and will deliver for larger orders.

Andre: My family and I went to Ms. Mary's in Carrollton. I had fried pork chips, rice with black eyed peas and cornbread. My wife had BBQ ribs, fries, macaroni and cornbread. While the kids had fried chicken, fried, macaroni and cornbread. The whole family really enjoyed the experience and we will definitely go back soon. The man (George) that delivered my food was awesome and very friendly. They had curbside service only.

Jane Ann: My first experience with Jamaican jerk food was at The Island Spot in Carrollton. The restaurant in the retail strip was colorful as you’d expect an Island “spot” to look, and the soft Reggae rhythmic music in the background added to the ambiance. I found myself swaying to the music as I waited with Julie for our take-out orders. The patrons were friendly, and it was easy to engage fellow customers in conversation. I ordered the jerk salmon and sides of Jamaican rice and peas and a cabbage vegetable mixture. The sides were very tasty as well as the salmon; I found the spicy sauce intensified the more I ate! But eating a chaser of their mango cheesecake eased my fiery palate. It was a tasty first experience. I will come back; I’m thinking I’ll try the coconut shrimp the next time.

Jamie: Winners was finger licking good. Selena and I go there early as we heard they tend to sell out by 12:30 and there is typically a line of hungry customers waiting. The food was incredible. We both had ribs, green beans and mac n cheese. The meat just fell off the bone! We will both definitely come back more often.

Annette: My neighbors I usually attend a weekly Taco Tuesday outing and ventured out to visit black owned restaurants starting in South Lamar near the old Sears building. We continued our venture and found Wings World on Martin Luther King near fair Park. This is a small restaurant but their purpose was delicious food. The owner Romond was there in the dining area, we had a great visit while ordering while also making recommendations. Two Lancaster brothers moved their business to Dallas both Oak Cliff and South Dallas and the best thing on the menu is something they came up with Wing Rolls. Of course I ate everything! They made the top seven best places for wings list. The staff was very fun and accommodating, the menu small but impactful. If you’re planning a casual buffet, you should consider ordering their amazing party packs, I can see this next year at my next Super Bowl get together for sure. Our group decided next week to visit Aunt Irene’s Kitchen on South Malcolm X Blvd. I had a great evening full of joy, fun and made new friends along the way in our amazing community from the stomach to the heart and look forward to continuing this with my friends and neighbors each week. Priceless experience!
