Words diminish.

In the past certain words were the source of strong emotions. Take "treason". Historically, accusing anybody of treason brought a lot of weight with it. Nowadays, the significance of labeling someone as a traitor has significantly diminished.

I see an analogy with how language evolves and how societies evolve – as our understanding and values change over time, certain words lose their power and impact, reflecting the shifting dynamics of our world.

The same applies to technology. As technology advances, certain once groundbreaking innovations become commonplace and lose their novelty.

Nobody is impressed anymore with the ability to send an email, as it has become a mundane and expected form of communication. Nobody thinks twice about the computing power sitting in devices in our pockets. iPhone 5 is now considered outdated and obsolete, a relic of the past. Yet, the computing power of 2 of these devices put together was equal to the computing power of a space station back then.

The generative AI hype is one year old. At first the ability to talk to a PDF, create a working game in 30 mins or have an image generated from natural language description were jaw dropping.

That effect has diminished. Hardly anyone is still impressed.

But let's not forget that the current limitations of AI are just a stepping stone towards its future potential. AI will never be as bad and as incapable as it is today. Tomorrow and the day after, we can expect AI to continually impress us with its ever-growing capabilities. So, while the initial awe may have faded, there surely are plenty of reasons to stay excited for what lies ahead.

What is it that today makes your jaw drop?
