A US delegation from Staten Island was impressed with how collaboration throughout the value chain has resulted in both on-shore infrastructure and technical solutions that reduce the carbon footprint in Greater Bergen harbours.
While several US states currently are piloting electric ferries, the West Coast of Norway has been successfully operating zero-emission vessels for several years. Zero-emitting ferries are important in making the region's harbours greener. However it is not just about designing new vessels. The use of new energy sources also creates a need for on-shore infrastrucure, for instance efficient solutions for charging and logistics replacing traditional oil tanks and filling stations.
Representatives for both ship builders, suppliers and area developers visited Bergen to meet with different actors in the maritime industry who all do their share of the work to make marine transport in Greater Bergen greener. They met with both ferry operators, producers of marine technology and land based infrastructure in Norwegian harbours.
The delegation expressed how impressed they were with the Norwegian companies they met and the region's joint effort to think innovative and future-based to reduce the carbon footprint.
Both EU, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and several countries are currently setting climate targets and impose regulations that will incrase the market demand for electric passenger vessels.
