T.A.F. / the art foundation presents the project Imposters, which inaugurates in its exhibition space on Tuesday 4 July, and hosts the works of a group of women, who have chosen to be led to new paths and different creative fields, later in their lives. Although they have made this transition following their obvious talents and inclinations, they are possessed by Imposter syndrome, trying to prove themselves anew - in a much more unique context.
Imposter syndrome afflicts individuals characterized by an inability to internalize their accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud". Despite external evidence of their ability, those who exhibit the syndrome, remain convinced that they are imposters and undeserving of success.
The Imposters project is a portrait of creative women, who feel insecure in their new roles, in their attempt to fulfil their professional vision. We picked out a mix of creative fields and disruptive careers wanting to support these creatives, normalize their experience and highlight their work. We re-appropriate the word imposter of the -now so common- imposter syndrome, a characteristic of contemporary female professional development, but in acknowledging this common experience, we will attempt to confront, subvert and therefore overturn it.
The exhibition Imposters is a synthesis of works of printmaking, poetry, photography, painting, embroidery and comics, accompanied by the respective transition stories of the creators, who left or started a new practice alongside the world of business and services to find themselves in their current creative fields. These are works that speak to female empowerment, to the security we would like to feel in our bodies for the freedom we want to characterize our thoughts, to the acceptance of enjoying our bodies and courageously articulating our words.
So we travel in a universe where "imposters" accept themselves, claim their space, dare to experiment and express themselves in whatever field they wish, whenever and however they wish, regardless of background, age, gender, sexuality, often choosing to confront the anxieties of this process with humour and self-sarcasm.
The works will be sold by the creators themselves.
