The impossible victory - Nuvolari 1935

I painted here what is considered the greatest Motorsport victory ever, "The Impossible Victory".

The 1935 German Grand Prix took place on the 172 corners of the Nurburgring circuit, known as "Green Hell". The political moment is delicate, the race being the most important season event. Many Nazi officers follow the race and, despite the bad weather, 300.000 Germans showed up waiting for a victory from Auto Union or Mercedes. Drivers have to cover 22 laps for a total of 502 kilometers.

The new German Grand Prix cars (backed by Hitler, with unlimited budgets) are technologically advanced both for using light alloys and new engines with 100 horsepower more than the glorious but old Alfa Romeo P3 of the now 42 years old Nuvolari, in the team headed by Enzo Ferrari.

Before the race Neubauer, Mercedes' famous sports director, declares: “Nuvolari has only a glorious past. The present and the future belong to the Führer pilots”.

However on the wet track halfway through the race, Tazio's talent took him to the lead with ease, because bad weather reduced the difference between the cars. But at the refueling in the pits the pump broke: the mechanics were forced to slowly pour the gasoline with a funnel. A disaster which cost Nuvolari 2 minutes and 14 seconds late from the head: he dropped to 6th place.

Tazio began a furious impossible recovery and lap after lap he resumed and passed Stuck, Fagioli, Rosemayer, Caracciola. He started the last lap 35 seconds behind Manfred von Brauchitsch's Mercedes, too much to recover, but the German driver got nervous and wore the tires stressed by the power of the Mercedes to the point that a few kilometers before the arrival a tire burst.

Nuvolari crossed the line with the crowd surprised and speechless for a few seconds. The organizers planned to play only the German anthem and did not have the Italian one, so a record was found with 'O Sole Mio'.
