It has been rightly said that nothing in this world is powerful than human soul on fire. We all have potential to do the extremes; the only need is full determination and hard work.
As humans we only see the success of other human beings, however we never try to understand the hard work and struggle that has gone behind the success. The same is applicable with the world famous Brooklyn Bridge.People always talk about its structure, durability and many other facts but very few know how much struggle was endured by John Rebelling and his family in order to build it.
I have heard and read many inspiring stories, and this definitely is one that everyone should be aware of.
The impressive Brooklyn Bridge connects New York City’s populous borough, Brooklyn with Manhattan. This is the oldest suspension bridge in the United States.
Now let’s go to the story behind it…..
Chief Engineer John Roebling wanted to build a Suspension bridge. Experts from all over the world asked him to forget the idea because it seemed impossible. Everyone said that it was impossible to build such a suspension bridge. However both John Roebling and his son Washington Roebling did not listen to them they just wouldn’t give up. They had decided to turn their idea into reality and prove to everyone that their idea was feasible.
John and Washington started the project, however a tragic accident happened during the project and John passed away. Due to another accident that occurred Washington was incapacitated (immobilised). The condition of Washington was very miserable, he was not able to walk, talk or even move. The future of construction of bridge was totally bleak and project was over.
All he could do was to move his one finger. The accident made his body useless but it didn’t affect his confidence. He was more determined than before gradually, using one finger he developed a code of communication with his wife (Emily).
Washington touched his wife’s arm with that finger indicating the intentions to call the engineers again. He used the method of tapping Emily’s arm to tell the engineers what to do .The entire instructions was given by this method and under the supervision of Emily. The project continued using this method. For 13 years, he tapped out the instructions to the engineers which included how to direct operations on the site, how to set the proper locations etc. and finally the bridge was completed. Emily and Washington worked together to fulfil John’s dream.
Together they proved that the only distance between a problem and its solution is the angle from which we see the problem.Rather than sitting and regretting over the situation they become inspiration for others.
Perhaps this is one of the best example of a never-say-die attitude. The Brooklyn Bridge is a testimonial to the fact that dreams which seem impossible can be realised with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.
So now that you know this story.....
Next time you are in a tough situation or have been assigned a difficult task and feel like giving up remember these words IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!
Challenge yourself ..raise the bar of your performance…be bold, be fearless….believe in the power of possibility….believe in yourself…you can make anything happen.
Go out and chase your dreams, no matter how impossible they seem at first.
Remind yourself that impossible is not a fact it is just an opinion and it is temporary!!
