What's Changing?

Several key visa regulations will be updated starting 1st July, significantly impacting visitor and temporary graduate visa holders. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Visitor to Student Visa Pathway Closed:

From 1st July, if you're in Australia on a tourist visa, you won't be able to switch to a student visa while you're in the country. This change aims to prevent the misuse of visitor visas and ensure student visas are granted to genuine students only. This measure follows over 36,000 such switches from July last year to May this year.

2. Temporary Graduate Visa Holders:

Temporary Graduate Visa holders will now face restrictions when applying for Student Visas onshore. This move is based on findings from the Grattan Institute’s "Graduates in Limbo" report, which indicated that 32% of these visa holders return to study mainly to extend their stay.

Aims: The government seeks to encourage these graduates to secure skilled jobs or pursue permanent residency, aiming to reduce the number of 'permanently temporary' residents.

3. Supporting Changes:

Post-Study Work Rights: The duration of post-study work rights for Temporary Graduate Visa holders will be significantly reduced.

Age Limit: The maximum age for holding a Temporary Graduate Visa will be lowered from 50 to 35 years.

English Requirements: Stricter English language requirements introduced in March will continue to apply, ensuring that those who come to study or work can effectively communicate and integrate.

4. Why Is This Happening?

These measures are designed to close loopholes in the migration system, particularly to end 'visa hopping'—where individuals stay in Australia indefinitely by constantly finding new ways to extend their visas. These changes aim to ensure that Australia's migration policies support genuine visitors and students while managing the country’s population growth effectively.
