An important perspective in visualization range and timeline consistencies for correct decision-making

Q: How well [or otherwise] do we mind-capture and interpret business performance when we move from one visual to another?
To illustrate, I took snapshots from Google’s ‘Dow Jones Industrial Average INDEXDJX: DJI. ‘
I am referring specifically to the ‘Y-scale’ which may not be noticeably changing in range when considering views across differing timelines
Q: Why is this important?
1.??????Knowing that automated visuals may be ‘auto-scaling’ is important, even if the changes are subtle because you will draw incorrect conclusions on the sizing of events.
How to keep track of movements between visuals. I use four guiding principles when looking at visual movements (I will use examples referencing the visuals below):
1.??????Visual 1 - 1 Day: Starting points (e.g., starts at 32,550 versus 0)
2.??????Visual 1 - 1 Day: Points range from visual to other visual (e.g., 1 Day 32,800 end – 32,550 start = 250 points range: Vusial 5 YTD: ~37,000 – 30,000 lowest point = 7,000 points range)
3.??????Fixate on a low point when moving from snapshot to snapshot (e.g., 1 Month snapshot low point of 30,630.17 on Thursday, June 04th, 2022 versus the 6-month snapshot low point of ~30,000 points on June 17th, 2022)
4.??????select a benchmark starting point (here I use the last chart on January 21st, 2000, indicating 11,251…)

Why is scaling across visualizations important?
Incorrect decision-making is both a deterrent to motivational optimization and costly based on scaling inconsistencies
What to do about scaling inside the multiple BI software available
1.??????Reduce or stop auto-scaling functions by overriding with fixed ranges across all reporting (you will need to?research across your existing reports and summary C-Suite reports)
2.??????Play with examples with one auto-scale and non-auto-scale option and see the impacts
3.??????Promote and share the benefits of how to do it within the software applications, and highlight the consistencies across all reports where the Y-axis is range constant
And on perspectives to drive currency in short-term views versus long-term analysis for future business decisions
As a perspective example, the DJI has performed strongly when considering as one example a 22.5-year starting point (~32,700 -~11,250 / ~11,250 = 190.67%) and even 15, 10, and 5-year-intervals.
