An Important Message From Our Executive Director: Techqueria’s Commitment to Supporting the Latiné Community in Times of Change

As a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Latiné professionals in tech, Techqueria is closely monitoring potential policy shifts that could impact our community’s work, safety, humanity and success not just in the industry, but in our country. We recognize that some of our members may feel uncertainty about what these changes mean, particularly regarding immigration rights, diversity in tech, and workforce opportunities. Our mission to foster a supportive and empowering environment remains stronger than ever, especially as we prepare to address any changes that could affect our community.

At Techqueria we are committed to ensuring that Latiné professionals not only enter the tech industry but thrive in it. We believe that there is no innovation without representation, and we will continue to advocate for access, equity, and inclusivity for Latiné professionals across the tech industry. Here’s how we’re already working to support our community in meaningful, impactful ways:

  • Providing Professional Development and Networking Opportunities: Through career fairs, panel discussions, networking events, partnerships with tech companies, and our annual summit, Techqueria connects Latiné tech professionals with mentors, job opportunities, and skills training. We know that a strong network and accessible opportunities are key to navigating and succeeding in a competitive industry.
  • Advocating for Diversity and Inclusion: Our organization is a vocal advocate for Latiné representation in tech, working with companies to implement DEI initiatives and foster inclusive workplaces. By forming alliances with industry leaders, we’re ensuring that companies recognize the value of diverse perspectives and actively support Latiné talent.
  • Supporting Community Well-Being: We understand that mental health and resilience are crucial in times of uncertainty and having community can be a source of encouragement. Techqueria’s platform both online and at our in person events provides a safe space for members to share experiences, connect and gain support.
  • Sharing Information and Resources: With the potential for new policies affecting our community, Techqueria members are actively gathering and sharing reliable information on immigration, work rights, and workforce development on our slack platform. As a community we are dedicated to keeping each other informed and empowered, providing up-to-date resources to help understand and navigate any changes that arise.

The Latiné community is a vital driver of U.S. economic growth. As the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. workforce, Latiné individuals contribute an estimated $3.2 trillion to the nation’s GDP. Latiné households contribute more in federal, state, and local taxes than they receive in public services, creating a net positive impact on the economy. Furthermore, undocumented immigrant households contribute significantly, paying $46.8 billion in federal taxes and $29.3 billion in state and local taxes. They also contribute $22.6 billion to Social Security and $5.7 billion to Medicare, supporting essential programs that benefit all Americans. Additionally, Latiné entrepreneurs are a major source of job creation, with Latiné-owned businesses generating over $500 billion annually in revenue. Supporting the Latiné community in tech and other fields is not only a matter of equity but a driver for sustained economic growth and innovation across the U.S.

Proposed policies aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and reducing pathways for immigrant talent directly threaten the Latiné community’s participation in the workforce, especially in industries like tech that rely on diverse talent to drive growth. If such policies are implemented, they could limit educational and career opportunities for Latiné individuals, which in turn affects the economy at large.

We also acknowledge that the Latiné community is not a monolith. We represent a range of cultures, identities, and perspectives, each uniquely affected by changing policies. This election impacts our community in diverse ways, and we stand committed to supporting all members of our community as they navigate the unique challenges they face.

Regardless of external challenges, Techqueria remains focused on advocating for a tech industry that is inclusive, diverse, and accessible for all. We are grateful to our members, partners, and allies who support this mission. Together, we can ensure that the tech landscape remains welcoming and empowering for the Latiné community, recognizing the essential contributions we make to both our industry and the broader economy.

To support our efforts in these uncertain times, consider donating to keep our community alive.
