AN IMPORTANT 911 CALL
A lay person watching a cop show or movie might be surprised to learn there are consummate professionals behind the scenes who are the real voice of the organization. Police dispatchers are critical members of the team and often the first to hear the anguished cries for help of people in crisis. A harried air traffic controller might feel comfortable in a busy comm center, taking calls and directing police resources while maintaining poise and even a touch of humanity.
How do I know? My wife's a police dispatcher. She's been telling me where to go for years.
They are expert multi-taskers, negotiators, and even confessors. Police managers who neglect to properly hire, train, and retain the highest quality people in these positions risk creating a substantial gap in their ability to provide real service. A recent recording of a Fountain Valley dispatcher handling a 911 call is not only a teaching moment for small children, but an illustration of the calm, professional, and caring voice of a police department.
