As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I often find myself striving for perfection and going above and beyond in my work. Although I continue to work on easing my perfectionism, I remain passionate about everything I undertake. When I commit to a project, I give it my all, regardless of the job type. My goal is always to produce exceptional work and receive proper recognition for it. However, this level of dedication comes at a cost.
?I have a vivid memory of a past job where I held the position of sales manager. I was determined to excel in my job and put all my efforts into it. I spent long hours at my desk, making calls, crafting persuasive emails, and devising strategies for the future. My commitment did not go unnoticed – my manager praised my dedication and my colleagues were in awe of my unwavering focus. I turned down invitations to lunch and passed on small talk to stay glued to my computer and phone. My hard work paid off, and I became one of the top salespeople in the company.
However, I couldn't help but question the cost of my success.
?For a while, I was experiencing "brain fog" and wasn't fully present. My daily routine was disrupted, and all I could think about was work - how to get that next client, the next strategy. I didn't have any personal time, rushing home just to eat and sleep, and then wake up and start over again.
Suddenly, I received a job offer that was too good to pass up. I was excited to move to a new company with more responsibilities, challenges, and recognition. But as soon as I started, I realized how overworked I had been. I hadn't taken a break, and the new job was even more demanding, both emotionally and practically. I was still working in the same mindset as my previous job, but without the energy or capacity to deliver.
Unfortunately, I didn't pass my probation period, as I found it impossible to deliver on my promises. It was a tough lesson to learn, but I realized that I needed to prioritize my work-life balance to achieve both personal and professional success.
?I was crushed and felt like I had let myself down. It made me start to question every success I've had in my life. My confidence faltered, and I became insecure about my skills and abilities, even though I knew I was a talented professional. If only I knew what was causing these feelings. I was committed, passionate, and always striving to be the best, but something was off...
?After losing my job, I embarked on an extensive journey of self-healing. I realized that neglecting my health and failing to prioritize my needs were the reasons for my downfall. As a result, I have established a better routine, set boundaries, and spent more time with my loved ones. Above all, I made my well-being a non-negotiable aspect of my life.?Though it's unfortunate that it took hitting rock bottom for me to recognize the importance of self-care, this experience has made me a stronger and more confident professional. I now know the value of living a fulfilling life while also doing my best work.
