Vision statements are tomorrow, mission statements are today.
It is important that the two of these work together and compliment each other. One doesn't work without the other, because having purpose and meaning and crucial for any business. Christina Perlinger, an Intern with DollarProbs LLC had a great comment about vision and missions statements, saying; "A company should have a vision because it inspires people in the company to commit, persist, and give their best. A vision serves as a guide in creating plans, setting goals, making decisions, and evaluating the work done on any project. Having a company vision/mission statement is a way for us to direct business in the right direction and help us plan."
A great way to come up with effective mission and vision statements is to brainstorm 20-30 words that you think of when thinking of the respective company. Have multiple people do it so there are hundreds of words. Collaborating together to construct these statements will most certainly give great results.
Two questions a company needs to address while constructing vision and mission statements--What do we want to ultimately become? What must we do to achieve it?
Mission Statement questions could be:
- What do we do?
- Whom do we serve?
- How do we serve them?
Vision Statement questions could be:
- What are our hopes and dreams?
- What problem are we solving for the greater good?
- Who and what are we inspiring to change?
Vision and Mission statements are crucial to the success of any company and must be thought out very carefully. The whole outlook and perception people have on a company can be directly related to these statements. If you are just starting a company or are part of one that needs a vision and mission statement, try some of the things discussed in this article.
