The Importance Of The View Of An Outsider

Today I wanted to ask you a question. I wanted to present this scenario to you, and I’m hoping that something will spring to your mind.

You hire a consultant to come into your business, no matter what it is and no matter for what aspect of it. A really good expensive one, which will imply high quality, the consultant knows a lot and can actually help.

They come in and do an analysis of your business, go through your processes and your paperwork or anything else. When the consultant offers their solutions and suggestions, would you be able to accept them?

More importantly, what in your brain right now is telling you that they would tell you? What’s the first thing? Within the first two hours of walking around in your business, talking with your people, looking through your books, etc.

I’m really trusting that all business owners have some degree of awareness of these types of things, because no business runs perfectly. It’s just the nature of humanity. We make mistakes and we don’t see everything.

We are not omnipresent, we are not able to be everywhere and influence everything all at once. Things happen, they slip through the cracks, you get overwhelmed, prioritization takes place as far as the importance of tasks and processes start to fail and get outdated.

The point being is often we need that outside perspective of somebody that’s really involved in-depth in your field. They have made it their business to help businesses like yours and they offer that unbiased opinion.

It’s possible to go blind out of pure ignorance. We just don’t know what we don’t know.

We have all probably been in that scenario where you don’t know the regulation in the IRS or anything of that nature. That’s why we hired CPAs and accountants, because that’s their job.

That’s why we hire people that are specialists in those realms to help us. Certainly, if you are dealing with anything federal, you want somebody to help you out with that because the regulations are massive. Same thing with any government really for that matter.

The other case, and I’m certainly guilty of this at times, is that we are willingly blind to those things. Maybe we are having this success going on, and maybe this little red light starts flashing in our peripheral vision of danger.

In the heat of making profit, you are being successful, hiring all these people, you might willingly turn a little bit of a blind eye to that.

Do you have the fortitude, have the ability to accept somebody coming in and going: “X, Y, and Z need to be fixed right now”?

The claim of not knowing doesn’t fly whatsoever. That’s not an excuse. I would hope that you have it.

Theoretically, you would because you have taken these steps, you are an entrepreneur, you have been put in charge and that ability to take that feedback and that criticism, despite how much it may sting at first, usually starts to manifest itself.

The best part about that consultant is they are doing it for your benefit. It will tell you the truth no matter how hard it hurts.

I want to take you back to what are some things that are popping into your brain right now based on if that consultant was to come over, for whatever aspect of your business, what are they going to see? What are they going to tell you right away?

It really becomes a self-reflection perspective. If you are having a little bit of “Oh, I don’t have anything wrong with my business”, you got to ask yourself if you are more interested in the success of your business versus your own ego.

Are you more interested in the success of the people that you may employ, that are on your team, than in stroking your own ego? Again, it’s a natural human tendency to have that pride and that sense of accomplishment as you do these things and grow.

There is however always room for improvement. As you are looking at potentially hiring a consultant, if you go out and look at this, because maybe you recognize that that is something that you need to do, I would encourage you to look for your mentors.

Not one mentor fits all, you will need different mentors for different things and different teachers to learn from throughout your life. Try looking outside of your community if it makes sense for your business. I would also highly encourage that this is in-person, not virtual.

It’s just a night and day difference. They talk to your people, look at your books, see your transactions, how you interact with customers, who are the customers, all those types of things.

Again, don’t forget your ability to accept that, take that to heart and implement those changes for the betterment of your business, your people, etc.

Please share with us the things you thought about during that self-reflection moment, those things that naturally you thought you could improve at your workplace.
