Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of the countless men and women who have served in the U.S. military. It’s a day of patriotism, reflection, and gratitude for those who have dedicated themselves to defending the country. As a U.S. History teacher in Florida, teaching about Veterans Day in the classroom takes on a special significance, providing students with a deeper understanding of its origins, its purpose, and the history of American military service.

This year, at Westside High School, we are approaching Veterans Day in collaboration with the BLK-OPS program, organized by Triple Nike Apparel / BLK-OPS Organization. This partnership aims to provide students with an enriched perspective on the contributions of Black veterans throughout American history—a critical aspect of both Black history and U.S. military history that deserves greater recognition. By highlighting these stories, we seek not only to honor Black veterans but also to create a comprehensive project that raises awareness, fosters appreciation, and builds community understanding of their sacrifices and achievements.

Teaching Veterans Day: A Historical Perspective

The origins of Veterans Day date back to World War I, also known as "The Great War." The fighting officially ceased with the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919, but the armistice—the temporary truce between Allied nations and Germany—took effect much earlier, on November 11, 1918. This date became a symbolic end to what was called "the war to end all wars," marking the beginning of Armistice Day celebrations in 1919. President Woodrow Wilson declared this day a time to reflect on the heroism of those who served and to express gratitude for the peace achieved. Over the years, this observance evolved, and by 1954, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day to honor all American veterans, reflecting the profound contributions of veterans from all conflicts.

This historical context not only honors veterans but also reinforces themes of patriotism, resilience, and sacrifice. Students are encouraged to reflect on these themes, helping them understand the gravity of military service and the importance of Veterans Day as a tribute to those who fought for peace and freedom.

Integrating BLK-OPS in the Classroom

The BLK-OPS program adds a unique dimension to our Veterans Day activities, focusing on the contributions of Black veterans who served in various conflicts and eras. This collaboration with Triple Nike Apparel / BLK-OPS Organization supports a larger goal: to educate students about Black history within the military and to celebrate the achievements and sacrifices of Black veterans.

Purpose of the BLK-OPS Initiative

The purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness and foster appreciation for Black veterans within the Westside High School community and beyond. By spotlighting these contributions, we honor individuals who have often been overlooked in traditional narratives, creating a more comprehensive understanding of American history. This initiative aligns with our mission to engage students meaningfully in history and social studies, encouraging them to think critically about the past and its implications for the present.

Execution and Engagement

  1. Research and Multimedia Presentations: Students conduct in-depth research on the roles of Black veterans across different wars, from the Revolutionary War to modern conflicts. These findings are then turned into multimedia presentations, displays, and interactive activities that allow students to creatively share what they’ve learned. This approach gives students an opportunity to become active participants in their learning, creating content that can be shared with their peers, families, and the community.
  2. Community Engagement and Event Planning: Our project extends beyond the classroom, encouraging students to connect with local veterans' organizations and community leaders. Students gather stories from Black veterans, bringing personal narratives to life within the school. The culmination of this project will include panel discussions, guest speakers, and even historical reenactments, providing an immersive experience that deepens students’ understanding of the veterans’ experiences.

Through these activities, we aim to connect students to the living history within their own community, making history come alive in a way that textbooks cannot.

Why Veterans Day Education Matters

Incorporating Veterans Day into the curriculum is essential in helping students understand and appreciate the contributions of veterans. It teaches them about the sacrifices made to secure the freedoms they enjoy, fostering a sense of gratitude and respect. This education also empowers students to recognize the diversity within the armed forces, seeing how individuals of all backgrounds—including those from Black and minority communities—have been integral to the nation’s defense.

By honoring Veterans Day and collaborating with the BLK-OPS program, we create a powerful learning experience that underscores the importance of diversity, history, and sacrifice in our nation’s story. As educators, our role extends beyond teaching historical facts; we strive to cultivate empathy, gratitude, and a deeper connection to our collective past. With these efforts, we hope to inspire students to not only honor veterans but also carry forward the values they fought to protect.

This is another great example of why I love teaching for Duval County Public Schools . I truly enjoy bringing programs such as BLK-OPS to my students so they can hear these amazing stories from our living history and be inspired by their service and dedication to our nation.
