The Importance of Upholding Ethical Standards in Business: Why "It's Just Business" Is No Longer Acceptable.
How Entrepreneurs Can Demonstrate Soft Skills, Integrity, and Values-Based Leadership to Make a Positive Impact.
Entrepreneurs put their heart and soul into their work, making it a reflection of their beliefs, values, and image. However, not everyone follows the same ethical standards. While it's okay for individuals to approach things differently, it's not acceptable if it crosses our moral boundaries. We should not respect those who do not adhere to our values.
Nic Haralambous first explored this in his 2014 article - Why “It’s Just Business” Is Bullshit. The phrase "it's just business" is (still) no longer an excuse for unethical behavior. It suggests that business is separate from our personal values and implies that unethical actions are acceptable. However, soft skills such as empathy, integrity, and emotional intelligence are highly valued in today's world.?
Most investors, employers, and potential clients look for individuals who can not only get the job done but also maintain ethical standards and build positive relationships. As I have mentioned in a previous article, companies spend hours, sometimes days, establishing their mission, vision, and values, which are then applied to how team members collaborate with each other and clients. These values are so important that potential team members are even shown them during the hiring process, and team members may be held accountable for adhering to them outside of work hours. For most entrepreneurs, every aspect of their work is personal, as it reflects their thoughts, actions, and vulnerabilities.
It's crucial to know our boundaries and follow our own set of rules. We can work hard to achieve our goals without sacrificing our ethics. Treating people poorly is not justified under the guise of "hustle." We should conduct business sincerely and ethically, with the best interests of all parties involved.

By rejecting the notion that business is separate from personal values, we demonstrate the soft skills that are highly valued in today's business environment. We show that we care about the impact of our actions on others, prioritize honesty and integrity in our interactions, and are willing to stand up for what we believe in, even when it's challenging or unpopular.
Rejecting the idea that "it's just business" shows that we possess the qualities that are prized in business today. We demonstrate that we are not just skilled at the fundamental requirements, but also ethical, compassionate, and principled individuals who aim to make a positive impact on the world around us.

1 年Great discussion to have, Kane. I have walked away from some extremely lucrative opportunities because of misalignment with my ethics. This is why B corps are appealing to people like me.
