The Importance of Understanding your Pain

As a physiotherapist, I often see patients who are struggling with pain. Some of them have Acute pain, Others have chronic pain.

?No matter what type of pain a patient is experiencing, I always ask them the same question: "Do you understand your pain?"

?I ask them this question because I believe that understanding one's pain is essential for managing it effectively. Gaining an understanding of pain helps reduce the fear and anxiety surrounding it and this can help reduce the impact pain causes.

?Pain is a complex phenomenon and can manifest in numerous forms, Finding the cause of pain is like solving a puzzle. Each person's pain is unique. The cause may be physical injury /Overuse, or it may be lifestyle-related (a sedentary routine, poor posture) or Psychosocial (stress, anxiety)

?Pain?has three dimensions. The sensory (the actual feeling of pain, its nature and locality), the cognitive (what we think about the pain and how interpret its meaning and context) and the affect (how we behave in reaction to it)

?Whatever the cause, observing and understanding the specifics of one's pain can help you understand why you are in pain, which can help you make better decisions about how to manage it.For example, if you know that your pain is triggered by sitting for long periods of time, lifestyle modification and ergonomic adjustments could be the way to manage it.

?If you understand your pain, you are also better able to identify what helps it and what makes it worse. This information can help you develop a personalized pain management plan.

?By understanding your pain, you can take control of it and improve your quality of life. You can become an active participant in your own healing journey, rather than a passive recipient of treatment.

Armed with knowledge, you can engage in meaningful conversations with healthcare providers, seeking collaborative solutions tailored to your specific needs.

So, the next time you find yourself in pain, ask yourself, "Do I truly understand my pain?" Acknowledge your pain, learn from it and explore the #possibilitiesbeyondpain

Good article on pain understandings Gratitude to the most minimum or maybe transient amount of pain relief, is an integral part of pain decipherence. Appreciating a 1% pain relief can go a long way in the brain. Its commisural inter connections will make sure that the 1% can translate to a bigger 50% or more, as far as alleviation perception is concerned. If the expectations are high, the awareness becomes un realistic. The reality is what happens now, at this very moment. The acceptance is now, at this very instance. We have to understand that thoughts like any other bodily functions initiates from small beginnings and learning to progress step by step, being grateful to the changes that nature provides are all pre requisites to conquering this unpleasant response.

Shanavas Ullattuthodiyil you are way different from other physiotherapists out there… from the time I first met you in 2017, you taught me this concept of how to manage pain…. And I was determined to improve my flexibility in my core back without any support of medicinations and Alhamdulillaah it has improved much and thus has led me to get back to sports in my late 30s and motivate others to pick up some form of sports, the team at Rashid Hospital is fortunate to have you and all your unit is impressive along with the great doctors. Great article and keep spreading your work For all my connections, if you live in Dubai and have a long time lower/upper back or neck issue, get an appointment and attend his session, you will never be disappointed !
