The Importance of Understanding Failure: Strategy vs. Execution

In the world of business management, failure analysis is crucial for growth and improvement. However, managers often fall into the trap of attributing failures to "doing the wrong thing" rather than considering "doing it in the wrong way." This bias is driven by a natural desire to protect our sense of professionalism and competence.

When failures are attributed solely to flawed strategies, potentially valuable ideas are discarded prematurely. In reality, many failures result from poor execution rather than bad concepts. A well-conceived strategy might falter due to inadequate planning, resource misallocation, or insufficient training. By not recognizing this, organizations miss out on opportunities to refine and successfully re-implement these strategies.

This misattribution leads to a cycle of constantly seeking new ideas, wasting time and resources. Instead, managers should rigorously analyze both the strategy and its execution. Conducting post-mortem analysis sessions, where all aspects of a project are scrutinized without assigning blame, can foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Understanding the difference between "doing the wrong thing" and "doing it in the wrong way" is essential. By focusing equally, if not more, on how we execute strategies, we can unlock the full potential of our ideas, drive innovation, and achieve greater success. Let’s embrace a more nuanced approach to failure analysis and transform our setbacks into stepping stones for future achievements.

Can you think of examples where a strategy was prematurely labeled as poor, only to see competitors succeed by implementing the same strategy effectively? I invite you to share your experiences and insights in the comments below

Many other options exist - doing it with wrong people, doing it with no money, doing it with wrong investors

Understanding the difference between ?doing the wrong thing? and ?doing it in the wrong way? — yes, very valuable point. I believe every idea could be pivoted to success. I believe pivot doesn’t means always something global like YouTube made from dating to Viode. Often it’s changing in deep level like retention or giving more value to the core customer to reach this aha-moments and cross dead valley till real product-channels-market got reached.
