The Importance of Turning On Your Out of Office

Our jobs are fun and demanding. Our industry is fast-paced and constantly changing. Plus, our desire to be impactful leaders and bring our best to work every day can tempt us to work long hours and skip vacations. But taking time off is something we should prioritize and plan, because it’s essential for the success of your team and you as a leader.???
I’m looking forward to taking a much-needed break in just a few days to celebrate the summer with my family. This time away from work gives me the opportunity to relax, recharge, and come back to the office feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It’s also good for my mental and physical wellbeing. When I’m well-rested and have had a chance to decompress, I’m better able to handle stress, make sound decisions, and be more productive.
Stepping away and being fully present on your vacation also demonstrates trust in your team. It shows confidence in their ability to handle responsibilities while you’re away. This can boost morale and build stronger relationships within the team. When employees feel trusted, they're more likely to be engaged and committed to their work.
Of course, you’ve got to plan ahead and make sure your team is set up for success before you update your out of office response. I make it a priority to communicate with my team about upcoming vacation plans, delegate responsibilities, and provide clear instructions. I trust my team to handle things when I’m away, which allows me to use my vacation time to truly disconnect and recharge (thanks team).?

This can also provide an opportunity for others to step into leadership roles. It can be a valuable development exercise for employees and helps to build a strong leadership pipeline. When members of our team are given the chance to take on new challenges, they learn and grow, and the organization benefits from a more well-rounded and capable workforce.?
Taking vacation is not a luxury—it's a necessity for maintaining a healthy balance with all of our priorities in life and sustaining long-term personal success. If we have the space to disconnect and decompress, we can improve our mental health, build trust within our teams, develop future leaders, and come back to the office ready to go.?
I’ll ask again, when is your next vacation?
