History is a subject that often gets ignored by students, but it plays a significant role in shaping our understanding of the world around us. It is a subject that can provide us with insights into the past and help us to make sense of the present. However, the way we teach history in schools has been a subject of debate and controversy for many years. It is time to take a closer look at how we teach history and why it is important to present a balanced and comprehensive perspective.
The current debate around removing certain chapters from history textbooks is a reflection of our socio-political environment. It is essential to acknowledge the truth as we universally know it today while being open to new research that may provide new insights and perspectives. The contribution of Mughal and Sultanate rulers to the evolution of Indian society cannot be denied. They influenced our social, cultural, and linguistic traits to a great extent. However, it is equally important to acknowledge that these rulers also tried to uproot the religion of the land and levied taxes on its people for not thinking as they did. The destruction of much of our built-up and educational heritage is also a fact that cannot be ignored.
To provide a comprehensive picture of history, we need to present both the positive and negative aspects of historical events. The Sultanate and Mughal era, for instance, was a period of great cultural and artistic achievement in India. The Mughal emperors patronized literature, music, and dance, and their courts were centers of learning and intellectual exchange. However, it is also important to acknowledge that these people were not always benevolent rulers. They enforced religious policies that were detrimental to the majority of the population and caused much social and economic destruction.

Another important aspect of history that needs to be emphasized is the importance of unity. The breakdown of political unity resulted in regime changes and foreign invasions. The lack of stability and unity amongst Indian politicians and political thought led to negative social change in the past. Our failure was due to our inability to provide a united front against invaders and internal strife. The Afghan, Persian, Turkmani, Mughal, and later the European ascendancy were to a great part due to the lack of stability and unity amongst Indian politicians and political thought in that age.
Moreover, children should also learn about the importance of Hindu kingdoms such as Vijaynagar, Chola, Pandya, and Maratha Samrajyas, which have been pushed to the sidelines by a myopic policy of emphatic northern history. These kingdoms played a significant role in shaping the cultural and social fabric of India. Vijaynagar, for instance, was a great Hindu kingdom that existed from the 14th to the 16th century. It was a center of trade and commerce, and its rulers patronized literature, art, and music. The Cholas were another great Hindu dynasty that existed for a thousand years. They were known for their naval expeditions and their contributions to art, architecture, and literature.
It is important to teach history from a neutral perspective and not engineer thought. The removal of chapters may not be the best solution, but adding chapters that show the complete picture of history is important. Children should learn history as long as they view both sides dispassionately.
In conclusion, teaching history in schools is essential, but it should be done in a way that presents a balanced and comprehensive perspective. Acknowledging the contributions and shortcomings of all rulers, emphasizing unity, and including the stories of Hindu kingdoms are crucial

1 年Which part of our history (the ver we studied back at school) was dispassionately written? We need a factual version, which neither the left nor right regimes are inclined towards. One sans any 'greats', one where inscriptions are not given in convenient parts subtracting pieces that would give the full picture. One that is free from the Macaulay influence - of course much depends on what is the end product of person that is sought. Macaulay wanted good clerks and his system delivered. It continues to deliver.
