The importance of SUE!

The importance of SUE!

I was perusing through this comparative analysis of services provided by private locators on Science Direct and a few charts stood out to me so I wanted to share a few quickly, because I think SUE and our current one call system need to grow closer together.

this is a good summation of where we're at right now

The study looks at how private locators provide their services and the difference between SUE and the current One Call System. This is great because we can see what the most common technologies and tools are for locating & the divide between SUE & Non-SUE providers.

We already have the data from the DIRT report that Vacuum Excavation needs to be more common and here we can see SUE providers are more likely to use it.

The above chart shows how far in front SUE is in terms of mapping, sketching and GIS data. Physical marks are currently perceived to be more important for regular one call locates but I think that's going to change pretty soon as more mapping tech like 4M Analytics or the Minnesota initiative show

Anyways this was meant to be just a snapshot of the study and my thoughts - let me know what you think?

Folks, what could be more eye opening than this? SUE is the way to go. this service can lower your risk & provide a real buildable job. Studies of shown for over forty years , that every dollar spent on SUE during the design phase provides a return at construction phase of $1.45. Reduces cost due to utility damages, change orders, contractor claims, redesigning, schedule delays from any of these issues. What could be a better investment to lower your projects design issues, due to unforeseen risks.

I'd have to agree, SHANE. The mapping technology available today truly is going to make the industry change. The data is now available almost on-demand and has shown to often times be just as accurate, if not more. Oh how exciting the coming months and years will be as technology, such as digitally available utility databases become more well-known. SUE won't go away by any means, but the approach and methods will evolve around the available tech. It should all be centered around the risk aversion, cost savings and lives to be saved by the partnership of this tech and boots on the ground. And great job on your first post. Looking forward to many more!
