Today, we are living in a world that is immersed in digital technology. The time our society spends on social media platforms and browsing through the web is constantly increasing. For this reason, it is important that businesses capitalise on this engagement and wide audience on social media platforms.


The question is how? What can businesses do to make the most of this opportunity that is at our fingertips. Firsty, the most important step is to create business accounts across all the necessary platforms. What platforms you may ask? The answer will vary for each business. For example, a clothing business should create accounts on Instagram & Facebook as these two powerhouse social media platforms are mainly designed to showcase images, videos and content to an extremely broad market which allows businesses to create ad campaigns to target their specific audience with ease. What about an IT Business? In contradistinction, Instagram would not be of great use to an IT business. A more suitable approach would be to establish a solid network on LinkedIn to create relationships as it is the main social media platform for business2business marketing.

The beauty of social media marketing is that it can be done organically, at no cost. Through simply setting up accounts, using hashtag techniques and posting the right content businesses are able to create a great marketing platform. This leads to the next step: posting on the social media platforms. Businesses should do a bit of 'trial and error'. They should be assessing which type of posts are resulting in the best user engagement whether it be a video, a photo, a text, an article or a link? The options are endless.

Small businesses operating on a local level should not be looking past the effectiveness and endless value of social media marketing. Creating accounts also helps businesses appear in search engines such as Google. It is important that there is consistency throughout the platforms and ensure that you redirect your audience through all the platforms your business is present on. On Instagram for example, there is the option to use 'location' on posts; this function helps reach potential customers within the geographical area of your operations.
