THE IMPORTANCE OF A SMALL ACTION
Spring has past, summer has gone, and winter is here…. And the song that I was meant to sing…. remains unsung, for I have spent my days stringing and unstringing my instrument. Rabindranath Tagore, Indian?poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter
Many people wait all week for Friday, all year for summer, all life for happiness. According to the statistics, more than 80% of New Year resolutions fail by the time we are 3 months into the new year… More than 2/3 of all diet intentions fail... Why? It’s simple: we are spending more time wishing things to happen rather than taking actions. We're waiting to ‘feel better’ or ‘more prepared’ to start a business, make a move, meet the people we want to meet, take up a hobby… This list can be endless.
Often, we're not even sure of what we're waiting for. It has been said that "good things come to those who wait." I do not think this is true. Good things come to those who act, those who act without waiting for the perfect moment to come. Bad news (or good news?!) is that we are not immortal! Why do we behave as if we are not aware of that well-known fact? There may be many reasons, but since I started my coaching business, I clearly identify the following 3 most common reasons to delay the actions:
Fears, Dysfunctional Beliefs, Imaginary Barriers which ‘help’ us with numerous excuses and assumptions.
Though it may take time, and sometimes professional support to overcome all these reasons, there is one thing you can do today: Take one small action at any entry point, you can always fine tune if needed.
Whether it's writing a book, planning a project, or struggling to make a difficult decision, begin with what is easiest for you. Then acquire more information and work around that. The important thought is ‘I can always fine tune, adjust, change, stop’.
The problem is that Tomorrow is overrated and Today is underrated. And if we don’t start taking actions now and wait for the right time, that time may never come.
P.S. My current life does not look anything like what I had planned. Things changed a lot. The changes started from the small actions enabled by thinking that I can fine tune and change if I need to... And today my life is better than anything I had ever planned!
