Sleep is often overlooked in our pursuit of health and well-being, yet it is as essential as food and water. On Wednesday 26th February, James Wilson, aka @TheSleepGeek took attendees on an engaging journey into the science of sleep, debunking myths, sharing practical advice, and emphasising why quality rest is critical for our physical and mental health.

As a self-proclaimed "poor sleeper” James shared his own struggles with sleep. Despite growing up in a family that made beds and mattresses, he faced poor sleep for years which he inherited from his Grandad. His experience led him to research sleep extensively and eventually establish Kipmate, a tool that helps hundreds of thousands of people improve their sleep, including celebrities, athletes and football players.

“Almost 20% of the UK population is considered sleep deprived”

James kicked off his webinar by highlighting the vital role sleep plays in our survival. Without it, we can only last about 9-10 days, shorter than the time we can go without food!

Sleep is essential for our recovery, growth, cognitive function, emotional resilience, and even our sense of humour. In his words, getting good sleep makes us "funnier, smarter, and sexier" - and who wouldn’t want that?

James discusses the importance of recognising our natural sleep preferences. He explains that people will fall somewhere in between a night owl and an early lark, owls being people who naturally stay up late and struggle with early mornings, and larks being early risers who feel most alert in the mornings. Understanding where you fall on this spectrum can help you optimise your sleep schedule and daily routines.

Rather than forcing yourself to fit in an unnatural sleep pattern, James advises working with your biological clock. If possible, schedule important tasks around the times when you are naturally more alert. While work schedules may not always allow for complete flexibility, small adjustments can make a big difference in energy levels and over-all wellbeing.

Did you know? 73% of our Webinar audience answered ‘yes’ to suffering from poor sleep during a live poll.

The Truth About Sleep Aids

James touches on the various sleep aids that flood the market, from supplements and sleeping pills, to nose strips and mouth tape. While some of these products may have a placebo effect or work in specific cases, James warns against relying on them as a long-term solution. Many sleep aids promise a quick fix, but fail to address the root causes of sleep disturbances.

In regards to mouth taping, James explains that there is no evidence to show that it improves sleep. He also raises a concern that mouth taping could be dangerous for people who may suffer from sleep apnea.

34% of our audience claimed to use mouth tape

Instead of turning to sleep products, James advocates for addressing sleep hygiene, stress management, weight loss, and individual sleep needs. By focusing on sustainable habits rather than temporary solutions, individuals can improve their sleep quality without unnecessary expenditures.

Kipmate

Kipmate, The Sleep Geek's sleep toolkit, is a sleep support platform, designed to provide individuals with practical, science-backed strategies to improve their sleep. Unlike traditional sleep aids that rely on generic advice or quick fixes, Kipmate offers personalised guidance tailored to each individual’s unique sleep challenges.

Through Kipmate, James works with people one-on-one, providing education and strategies to help them understand their own sleep needs and habits. The platform focuses on breaking down the stigma around poor sleep and offering realistic, achievable solutions. Rather than relying on medication or sleep gadgets with dubious claims, Kipmate promotes sustainable lifestyle changes that lead to long-term improvements in sleep quality.

3 Ways to improve Your Wind-Down Routine?

Do you ever find yourself lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering why you’re not falling asleep? You're not alone.

Almost 20% of the UK population is considered sleep deprived

The truth is you can’t force yourself to sleep at an exact time - your body needs to be in the right state to naturally drift off. The good news is that with the right wind-down routine, you can set yourself up for a more restful night. Here are three simple but effective ways to improve your nighttime habits.

  1. Take a warm bath or shower – It might seem counterproductive, but taking a warm bath or shower before going to bed can help to lower your body temperature, helping you feel more relaxed and ready to rest.
  2. Get ready for bed an hour earlier – Trying to get ready for bed an hour before hitting the pillow. Dim the lights, change into comfortable pyjamas, and engage in calming activities such as reading or light stretching. This helps your mind transition from a busy day into a relaxed state.
  3. Be mindful of what you watch before you sleep – The content you consume can have an impact on your sleep. Instead of intense TV shows or an action-packed movie, opt for something soothing like a light-hearted show, or music that you enjoy. Choosing relaxing content helps your mind to settle down so sleep comes more easily.
