The Importance Of Self-Awareness In Business

People are by far one the most important assets of a business. One's self-awareness, though not something that is taught at schools, it is?fundamental not only to finding one's happiness and fulfillment?- both at work and in one's personal life; also it correlates to being a strong team player, leader, thinker, collaborator and all around top employee and person. Being aware multidimensionally of your strength's, weakness and how and where to lean in...

So let talk more about self-awareness, what if multiple aspects of what you see within a person, are a subconscious reflection of what you see within yourself?

If you begin to understand, accept and / or learn from what is in others, you simultaneously heal what you hide from within yourself. Some of us may think we don’t have certain more negative traits within us, because they are so deeply hidden, buried or ignored, that we are blind to their existence.

We all have darkness and light within us on different spectrums. Most of us are however ignorant of our darkness. Once we know all of ourselves, all of our darkness and all of our light, we become whole. Learning and progressing is about evolving and moving through states of self-awareness where we challenge, construct and step out of comfort zones to become a more dynamic colleague, leader and thinker!?

It is not just about learning from observing from others put here are more tips on how to aid self-awareness:

  1. Learn from your experiences. We find out what our strengths and weaknesses are through experiences, whether they're good or bad. ...?
  2. Embrace your failures. ...?
  3. Ask others for feedback. ...?
  4. Use personality tests to guide you. ...?
  5. Develop a coaching culture. ...?
  6. Take time to evaluate yourself.

As you improve self-awareness, you may start to realise that you're able to do a better job of assessing your capabilities more accurately. This allows you to choose challenging tasks and goals without exceeding your abilities - but at the same time pushing and growing yourself and not derailing! As important as your strengths are, you can also assess your weaknesses and work on addressing them in a realistic and meaningful way, with the correct support infrastructure.

Once aware of your values, you can control, explain or modify certain emotional reactions or actions taken in the past or about to take place in the present. Hence giving you a better understanding of critical problems and the necessary steps to address them in a more pragmatic and present manner with applied knowledge.

For some it may be particularly hard or even at times overwhelming for you to admit your weaknesses or limits, but the exercise is crucial for your own well-being, progression and emotional intelligence around colleagues, clients and business changes - especially in a competitive and fast-moving work environment!

So true! I think I learn something new about myself almost every week, including from personality tests that keep evolving. For example Meyers Briggs used to be four letters but now has a fifth relating to assertiveness and it gives another nuance. And not only the tests evolve, thinking about some of the aspects, one evolves oneself. From a Perceiver early in my career I’ve become more of a Judger (fortunately not extremely so), and from a Thinker I seem to have recently crossed over into Feeler territory. And I’ve always been a pretty solid Extrovert territory but I understand better in what ways I’m not, and how my wife and I differ in these ways.
