The Importance of Sampling

By Lori Wallace, Quality Manager, 20/20 Seed Labs

In farming there are many things that are out of our control, however using proper sampling techniques to obtain a representative sample is not one of them. Why is sampling so important you may ask? As a seed testing laboratory, our tests are only as representative as the sample that comes in our door.

The importance of taking a representative sample from your seed lot cannot be stressed enough. Seed testing results are meant to give a precise picture of the quality of the lot in question at the time of sampling but if the sample that we receive at the lab does not accurately represent the entire seed lot then the testing results cannot give you the accurate picture you need to make decisions.

There is also value in keeping a retained sample of each seed lot you are planting for your records but make sure you store them properly in breathable containers in a cool, dark area where pests are not able to get to them. These can come in handy should there be issues in the field.

There are numerous factors that go into getting a representative sample. These factors include appropriate choice of equipment, equipment cleanliness, using proper techniques to obtain samples, the number of primary samples taken, how the composite sample is mixed and divided -just to name a few. There are different requirements for sampling that you need to be aware of depending on what you are doing with the seed (APHIS, grading, ISTA certification, etc.) but the principles remain the same. Taking a representative sample is key.
